2024 Women’s Olympics: Nigeria eliminates Cameroon and advances to the next round

Nigeria secured their ticket to the final qualifying round for the Paris 2024 Olympics after defeating Cameroon 1-0 on Monday in Abuja.

Another step forward for Nigeria in the race to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The Super Falcons earned their spot in the final qualifying round after their victory over Cameroon on Monday. Following their goalless draw in Douala (0-0), the Nigerian team needed to defeat their Cameroonian opponents to continue their campaign.

And the team led by Aboudi Onguene rose to the occasion. Despite missing their star player Asisat Oshoala, the Nigerian Team got the job done, with Esther Okoronkwo opening the scoring in the 17th minute. An advantage they maintained until the final whistle.

Nigeria advances to the final round of qualifying phases, eliminating Cameroon, whose campaign ends at this stage. Another disappointment for the Indomitable Lionesses, already eliminated from the 2024 Women’s AFCON, which will take place in Morocco in a few months.

For the next stage, the fourth round of these women’s Olympic qualifiers, Nigeria will face in April the winner between South Africa and Tanzania. A crucial match for Tanzania after their 3-0 defeat against Bayanas in the first leg.
