Samsung faces historic first strike as Union demands wage increases

The National Samsung Electronics Union, representing about 28,000 workers, has announced the first strike in Samsung Electronics’ 55-year history. The union plans a one-day protest on June 7, urging all members to use their paid leave and hinting at a possible full-scale strike if their demands are not met.

The union seeks a 6.5% pay raise and a bonus tied to company earnings, but negotiations with Samsung management have stalled.

This action comes after long-standing tensions and a history of the company resisting unionization until 2020.

Analysts warn that a significant strike could disrupt Samsung’s chip manufacturing and global electronic supply chains.

Following the announcement, Samsung Electronics’ shares dropped by approximately 2% in Seoul.
