Burkina Faso launches major restoration of Boulbi Dam to boost agriculture and water security

In a significant step toward strengthening water security and rural development, the Burkinabe government has officially launched a large-scale dredging project for the Boulbi Dam in the Centre region. Spearheaded by Ismaël Sombié, Minister of Agriculture, Animal, and Fisheries Resources, this initiative aims to restore the dam’s full capacity, ensuring reliable water access for farming, livestock, and domestic use.

Revitalizing a critical water resource

The Boulbi Dam, a key infrastructure for irrigation and water supply in Kadiogo Province, has faced increasing siltation, reducing its efficiency—particularly during dry seasons.

The two-month dredging operation will cover 25 hectares, recovering an estimated 100,000 cubic meters of water storage capacity.

Upon completion in May 2025, the project is expected to significantly improve water availability for local communities and agro-pastoral activities.

A Model for sustainable development

This project aligns with President Ibrahim Traoré’s broader strategy to modernize Burkina Faso’s agricultural sector and enhance climate resilience.

Since taking office, Traoré’s administration has prioritized sustainable natural resource management, viewing it as essential for food security and economic stability.

The Boulbi Dam restoration sets a precedent for similar rehabilitation efforts across the country, ensuring long-term water sustainability.

Strengthening resilience and Self-Sufficiency

By investing in vital water infrastructure, the government underscores its commitment to rural transformation and environmental sustainability. The revitalized dam will support farmers and herders, reducing vulnerability to droughts and boosting productivity.

This initiative reflects Burkina Faso’s push toward self-reliance, a cornerstone of Traoré’s vision for a prosperous and equitable future.

The Boulbi Dam project marks another milestone in Burkina Faso’s journey toward resilience, demonstrating how strategic infrastructure investments can drive agricultural growth and improve livelihoods nationwide.
