Togo: Kovié Rice obtains protected geographical indication, a major step forward for agriculture under President Faure Gnassingbé’s leadership

Togo is marking a major milestone in its agricultural development with the granting of Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status to Kovié rice, locally known as « Kovié molou ».

This product becomes the first in Togo to receive this label, which certifies the quality of a product and ties it to its geographic origin. The recognition was made official during a ceremony held late last week, where the Association for the Promotion and Protection of the Geographical Indication of Kovié Rice (APIG-Riz de Kovié) received the certification issued by the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI).

Beyond its symbolic value, this distinction provides Kovié rice with legal protection against counterfeiting, while ensuring consumers of the product’s authenticity and traceability. It also highlights the traditional know-how of local producers and the unique agro-ecological characteristics of the Kovié region.

This certification comes at a time when Togolese authorities, under the leadership of President Faure Gnassingbé, are intensifying efforts to transform and modernize the agricultural sector. With its PGI, Kovié rice now stands as a success story for the country’s rice industry. Support continues through initiatives such as the Togolese Rice Valorization Support Project (PAVRIT), launched in October 2024 by the Togo Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI-Togo), aimed at boosting the competitiveness of Togolese rice and promoting its consumption on both local and international markets.

Under President Faure Gnassingbé’s leadership, Togolese agriculture is undergoing a revival, with a strong focus on transforming agricultural value chains and increasing rural incomes. The development of Kovié rice is a tangible example of the president’s commitment to energizing the local economy, promoting the quality of Togolese products, and improving the livelihoods of farmers.
