Togo: Gender equality, a major focus of President Faure Gnassingbé’s governance

Since taking office, Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé has made gender equality a political priority. His commitment is reflected in concrete actions aimed at ensuring a more balanced representation of women in decision-making spheres. A key milestone in this effort was reached in 2018 with the adoption of a parity law requiring political parties to present as many female as male candidates in elections. Thanks to this measure, the 2019 local elections saw remarkable progress: the number of women elected increased by 67% compared to the previous vote.

This drive to promote women extends beyond legislation. H.E. Faure Gnassingbé has also brought more women into his government. The appointment of Victoire Tomégah-Dogbé as Prime Minister — a first in Togo’s history — is a powerful symbol of this shift. She represents the momentum for change driven by the Head of State, who has ensured that other women hold strategic ministerial positions, thereby affirming their essential role in the management of public affairs.

Beyond politics, the Togolese leader has also laid the foundation for a more supportive economic environment for women. In 2019, he established the Support Fund for Women’s Economic Initiatives (FAIEF), a tool designed to facilitate access to financing for women entrepreneurs. This initiative has supported many women-led projects and contributed to job creation, especially in rural areas. It represents a decisive step toward women’s economic empowerment.

Finally, girls’ education is another cornerstone of this proactive policy. As early as 2010, the launch of the National Program for Girls’ Schooling laid the groundwork for a more inclusive future. By promoting the opening of new schools and the training of teachers who are sensitive to the specific needs of young girls, the program has significantly boosted primary school enrollment rates. Through these various initiatives, President Faure Gnassingbé has demonstrated a clear vision: to make equal opportunity between men and women a driving force for Togo’s development.
