Burkina Faso: Higher education, a strategic development priority for President Ibrahim Traoré

Under the leadership of President Ibrahim Traoré, Burkina Faso is steadily advancing towards sustainable development, placing education at the heart of its national priorities. Since taking office, the Head of State has consistently taken concrete steps to promote education, firmly believing that knowledge and training are the most powerful tools for building a resilient, prosperous, and sovereign nation.

This political will was once again evident during the Council of Ministers held on Wednesday, April 16, 2025. Following President Traoré’s initiative, the government adopted a decree declaring the urgent public interest of constructing a Faculty of Science and Technology (UFR/ST) and a university campus for the University Center of Dori, located in the Sahel region.

According to the Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, Professor Adjima Thiombiano, this strategic project is funded through collaboration between the Burkinabe state and its technical and financial partners. The aim is to expand access to higher education in a key region of the country that has long faced security and economic challenges.

The construction of this UFR/ST in Dori serves a dual purpose: to bridge the intellectual gap in the Sahel by bringing higher education closer to local populations, and to train a new generation of professionals and technicians to meet the development needs of the area.

This commitment to education is not new. Since the beginning of his leadership, President Traoré has launched several reforms and tangible actions in the education sector, including increasing the education and research budget, strengthening support for public universities, opening new university centers in previously underserved regions, and improving student living and study conditions by building dormitories and cafeterias.

The Dori University Center project is part of a broader results-oriented governance strategy. It clearly reflects the President’s commitment to placing human capital at the core of public policies—a fundamental condition for achieving truly sustainable development.
