Ghana: Police crackdown on arms trafficking, a victory in the fight against terrorism

In a remarkable display of vigilance and professionalism, Ghanaian Police have thwarted an attempted arms trafficking operation, highlighting their continued efforts to combat cross-border threats. In the early hours of April 18, around 3:30 AM, a meticulous road inspection at the Tadzewu-Mitsrikasa checkpoint in the Volta Region led to the interception of a significant cache of ammunition hidden aboard a bus traveling from Accra.

According to Regional Police spokesperson DSP Felix Danku, officers uncovered 60 cartons of AAA-type cartridges (15,000 rounds) and 72 cartons of BB cartridges (18,000 rounds), all carefully concealed beneath passenger luggage. This seizure ranks among the largest recorded in recent months and underscores the growing effectiveness of reinforced roadside checks in the region.

Two suspects were arrested: 45-year-old driver Abasou Fousseni and his assistant, 38-year-old Salisu Jalilu. While both denied involvement, investigations revealed that the assistant had allegedly loaded the ammunition without the driver’s knowledge. The driver was later released on bail to ensure the safe transport of passengers, while the assistant remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, April 22.

This successful operation showcases the diligence of Ghana’s customs and law enforcement officials, whose efforts play a crucial role in safeguarding regional stability. By intercepting illegal arms, Ghana strengthens its contribution to the fight against terrorism and transnational criminal networks.

Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining heightened security measures and working with regional partners to curb illicit trafficking. This victory serves as a reminder of the vital importance of security cooperation and unwavering vigilance in protecting West Africa from threats linked to arms smuggling and terrorist financing.
