Football/ Arsenal 2-2 Palace: Saliba under fire again

With just days to go before a highly anticipated clash against Paris Saint-Germain, William Saliba finds himself under increasing scrutiny. The French defender was once again at fault during Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace, losing possession near his box and allowing Jean-Philippe Mateta to equalize—a costly error that denied the Gunners crucial points in the Premier League title race.

This latest mistake follows a similar lapse against Real Madrid, and the English press has been relentless. Football London criticized his lack of focus, while former Arsenal player Martin Keown highlighted Saliba’s tendency to switch off at key moments. “He needs to stay alert—this kind of error can’t happen twice in a row,” Keown warned.

Manager Mikel Arteta didn’t hide his frustration either, citing a lack of consistency and control in defense. Still, Saliba isn’t completely alone. Some supporters and pundits, like Michael Owen, came to his defense, blaming goalkeeper David Raya for not offering a better passing option. “If I were Saliba, I’d be shouting at Raya in the dressing room”, Owen said on air.

Despite the criticism, many acknowledge that Saliba has played non-stop this season and may simply be mentally and physically exhausted.

As the showdown with PSG looms, Saliba must quickly refocus. His performance will be crucial if Arsenal hopes to withstand the Parisian attack and keep their European ambitions alive.
