Niger: When a diplomacy of sovereignty and dignity asserts itself in the face of geopolitical challenges

Niamey has officially unveiled its new diplomatic strategy, based on equality between states and the reclaiming of national sovereignty, during a key meeting with the diplomatic corps on Wednesday, April 23, 2025. Organized by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bakary Yaou Sangaré, the meeting marked the beginning of a series of discussions aimed at clarifying Niger’s vision since the rise of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) in July 2023.

In his address, Minister Sangaré reaffirmed Niger’s determination to break away from past dependencies, despite ECOWAS sanctions and external pressure. “Our people support this sovereign path,” he emphasized, pointing out that the National Assizes held in February 2025 had strengthened the legitimacy of this new direction.

Niger is now focusing on building strong, strategic regional alliances—such as the AES and the Confederation of Sahel States (CES)—to pursue a collective form of autonomy. “We favor balanced partnerships, free from interference and based on mutual respect”, said Justice Minister Alio Daouda, reaffirming the country’s commitment to international law.

In response to diplomats’ questions about the implementation of this vision, the authorities reiterated their commitment to transparency and reciprocity. “Niger is not rejecting cooperation—it simply demands that cooperation finally serve its own interests and those of its people,” summarized an advisor to Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine.

This meeting confirms Niamey’s firm stance in defending its sovereignty while remaining open to renewed dialogue. It is a bold course of action, hailed by many observers, for a Niger that is free, proud, and in control of its own destiny.
