In the Hauts-Bassins region, the Burkinabe government is taking a major step forward in agricultural development with the official launch of construction work on the Diaradougou Dam. Located in the commune of the same name, this large-scale hydraulic project was inaugurated by the Minister of State, Minister of Agriculture, Animal and Fishery Resources, Commander Ismaël SOMBIE.
With an estimated storage capacity of 10 million cubic meters of water, the dam aims to profoundly transform the local agricultural dynamics. It will enable the irrigation of more than 1,260 hectares of farmland in the Bama plain, an area already renowned for its agricultural potential.
Funded with 6 billion CFA francs from the state budget, this investment reflects the government’s strong commitment to strengthening the country’s food self-sufficiency. Thanks to this infrastructure, many farmers will now be able to practice agriculture year-round, breaking free from dependence on unpredictable weather conditions.
Beyond boosting agricultural yields, the Diaradougou Dam also offers opportunities for the development of livestock farming and fishing. Local populations will have more stable access to water for livestock watering and sustainable fishery activities, thus enhancing food security and creating rural jobs.
The project is fully aligned with the government’s agro-pastoral offensive, aimed at revitalizing the rural economy, reducing poverty, and ensuring Burkina Faso’s food autonomy. In the long term, the completion of this infrastructure is expected to help reverse the trend of food imports while boosting more competitive and diversified national production.
This new project brings hope to thousands of Burkinabe citizens, offering better prospects for income and quality of life. Once completed, the Diaradougou Dam will undoubtedly stand as a strategic pillar for the country’s food sovereignty.
