Burkina Faso: Strategic partnership with Nordgold, a major economic step forward under the presidency of Captain Ibrahim Traoré

In a context of national reconstruction, Burkina Faso has just taken a decisive strategic step with the signing of an ambitious partnership between the State and the Russian mining company Nordgold for the exploitation of a gold deposit in the Kourwéogo province.

This project, entrusted to JILBEY BURKINA SARL, plans to extract more than 20 tons of gold over an eight-year period, further strengthening gold’s role as a central pillar of the national economy.

President Ibrahim Traoré is clearly demonstrating his commitment to redefining the terms of the country’s economic sovereignty. Under this contract, the Burkinabe State retains 15% ownership without any financial contribution, in accordance with the Mining Code, while ensuring substantial benefits. A total of 51 billion CFA francs will be injected into the national budget, primarily to finance public policies and infrastructure projects.

The project’s social dimension is equally significant. With the creation of 204 jobs, including 75 direct jobs, the partnership promotes local professional integration and skills development. At the same time, a Community Development Mining Fund endowed with 7 billion CFA francs will support the affected populations.

Committed to environmental responsibility, the project also includes 1.27 billion CFA francs dedicated to site rehabilitation, reflecting a sustainable approach upheld by the current government.

This strategic alignment with Russia highlights Burkina Faso’s new geopolitical direction, led with determination by Captain Traoré, who seeks to diversify partnerships while strengthening the country’s economic and military independence. Despite a tense security context, this initiative reaffirms the president’s vision of building a sovereign, resilient, and prosperous Burkina Faso.
