Togo / 65 years of independence, between memory and future challenges

On April 27, 2025, Togo celebrated the 65th anniversary of its accession to international sovereignty. In Lomé, as across the entire country, the day was marked by official ceremonies, parades, and a series of events symbolizing the nation’s deep attachment to its roots and its ambition for the future.

The grand parade, led by President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, brought together the Togolese Armed Forces, security services, and representatives from various sectors of civil society. For several hours, soldiers, police officers, customs agents, firefighters, students, associations, and folkloric groups marched in succession, reflecting the vitality and cohesion of the Nation.

Beyond the pageantry, these celebrations highlighted the milestones Togo has achieved, while also underscoring the many challenges that remain: strengthening democracy, modernizing the economy, combating inequality, and adapting to climate change.

In the prefectures and regional capitals, local parades organized under the supervision of administrative authorities demonstrated that the spirit of national unity remains alive across all segments of the population.

Throughout the week leading up to the event, authorities inaugurated numerous infrastructures and launched major development projects, showing a clear intent to anchor the commemoration in a dynamic of concrete progress.

At 65 years old, Togo looks back on its past with respect, while thoughtfully considering the future it aims to build. This year’s celebrations are not just a moment of remembrance; they are an invitation to rethink the path toward a fully realized and shared sovereignty for all Togolese citizens.
