Obangame Express : Togo confirms its position as a regional leader in maritime security

Togo, a leader in maritime security in the sub-region, will once again host the Obangame Express from May 11th to 16th, following those held in 2022. These naval exercises, which take place within the framework of cooperation with the US military, bring together a coalition of countries from Africa, Europe, North America, and beyond.

The country under Faure Gnassingbé confirms its position in this regard on the regional stage. The operation organized by the United States Africa Command aims to strengthen the capacities of African navies in combating maritime security threats.

Moreover, these naval exercises serve as a call for regional cooperation to effectively address security challenges at sea. Togo, a pioneer in combating piracy, illegal fishing, maritime terrorism, and illicit trafficking, expects these simulation exercises to enhance maritime surveillance techniques, rapid intervention, and crisis management at sea by the national navy.

Thus, these operational capacity enhancements complement the various mechanisms and initiatives put in place by the country to secure and monitor its waters. Among these mechanisms are the reinforcement of the national navy and the establishment of a special coast guard unit.
