May 25 proclaimed World Football Day by the United Nations

This is the resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, which celebrates football as a « universal language spoken worldwide and transcending national, cultural, and socioeconomic barriers ».

According to this UN body, 2024 marks the centenary of the first international football tournament in history, featuring representation from all regions within the framework of the 1924 Summer Olympics, held in Paris.

For Libyan ambassador to the United Nations, Taher El-Sonni, who presented the resolution, football is the most practiced and popular sport in the world, enjoyed by children, youth, adults, and the elderly with joy.

Therefore, the United Nations has proclaimed May 25 as the day to celebrate football through the text entitled « Sport for Development and Peace: Building a Peaceful and Better World through Sport and the Olympic Ideal ».

Furthermore, the UN acknowledges « the global reach of football and its impact in various fields, including commerce, peace, and diplomacy, and recognizes that football creates a space for cooperation ».
