Togo: Partners ready to invest for good cotton production
The partners in the cotton sector in Togo, namely NSCT and the National Federation of Cotton Producers’ Groups of Togo (FNGPC), have reached a compromise. An agreement has been made to optimize cotton production while ensuring the well-being of the producers.
Appropriate measures have been taken in consultation to make this vision achievable. Among these measures is the setting of the purchase price of seed cotton at 300 FCFA per kilogram for the first choice and 280 FCFA for the second choice. This measure guarantees a competitive rate for the producers. Next is the price of NPKSB 12-20-18-5-1 and Urea 46% N fertilizers, which are often used in cotton production.
These will now be sold to producers at a subsidized price of 14.000 FCFA per 50-kilogram sack. Another important measure is the creation of a tripartite committee, according to the information. This committee will include representatives from the FNGPC, NSCT, and the State, represented by the Ministries of Agriculture and Finance.
Its mission will be to supervise strategic issues and ensure harmonious coordination of the cotton sector. According to the Togolese Minister in charge of Agriculture, these decisions aim to support producers in their efforts and encourage them to improve the productivity of their crops.
This also helps to prepare for the smooth running of the 2024-2025 agricultural campaign. To recall, the previous production was estimated at 70.000 tons. The
cotton sector plays a strategic role in the Togolese economy, contributing between 1% and 4.3% to the GDP, depending on the year.
