Chad: Agreement between the government and Huawei for digital transformation projects

The Chadian government has recently revived its digital transformation projects. Selecting strategic partners is crucial to achieving the set objectives. Chinese technology company Huawei has expressed its interest in supporting Chad in realizing its digital projects.

Prime Minister Allah-Maye Halina received a delegation from Huawei Technologies, led by its director in Chad, Feng Guo Jeremy, on Friday, June 28.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Digital Affairs, the discussions primarily focused on digital projects and the improvement of information and communication technologies (ICT) in Chad. Huawei has offered to support the government in achieving its technological development goals.

The delegation’s visit comes nearly a year after the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Chadian government and Huawei during Huawei Connect 2023. Under this agreement, Huawei committed to becoming a key partner to the Chadian government and assisting in creating an ecosystem conducive to the development of digital talent in Chad.

The support from the Chinese company is expected to significantly advance Chad’s digital projects, which are part of the new government’s program. These projects include improving digital infrastructure, integrating digital technologies into the educational system, digitizing government services, and fostering technological innovation.

It should be noted that the country faces significant challenges in the digital sector. According to the DataReportal platform, Chad had 3.2 million internet users in January 2023, with an internet penetration rate of 17.9%. During the same period, the number of mobile phone users was 11.5 million, with a mobile penetration rate of 63.9%.
