Ghana: The “one million coders” initiative ushers in a new era of digital prosperity

Ghana has taken a major step forward in its digital revolution with the official launch of the “One Million Coders” program by President John Dramani Mahama. This flagship initiative of Ghana’s Reset Agenda aims to equip the youth with key skills for the digital era.

During the launch ceremony in Accra, the Head of State emphasized the transformative nature of the project. “This is not just about technical training, but a strategic investment to build a globally competitive knowledge economy,” he stated.

The initiative is part of a long-term vision. In the medium term, it will help close the digital skills gap while boosting the local startup ecosystem. In the long term, it will position Ghana as a regional tech hub and a driver of innovation.

The program promises significant economic benefits, including the creation of hundreds of thousands of skilled jobs, a substantial increase in the digital sector’s contribution to GDP, and a reduced reliance on traditional industries.

What makes the program especially innovative is its inclusive approach. It prioritizes young graduates, with women making up 40% of the beneficiaries, and reaches rural populations through a nationwide network of training centers.

By massively training in coding professions, Ghana is empowering itself with the tools of digital sovereignty while preparing its youth for future economic challenges. This initiative marks a turning point toward a prosperity based on knowledge and innovation.
