DRC: Prime Minister Judith Suminwa calls on members of government to live modestly

On July 22, 2024, Congolese Prime Minister Judith Suminwa delivered a notable speech at a government seminar, urging her team to “banish ostentatious displays of wealth” and “excessive luxury”. Her powerful statement highlights the growing gap between leaders and the citizens they are meant to serve.

Prime Minister Suminwa rightly pointed out that while some leaders flaunt their affluence, most Congolese struggle daily to meet their basic needs. She emphasized that government officials should practice humility and focus on critical issues like access to clean water, food, education, and healthcare.

This stance is not only brave but essential. By refocusing on social issues, Prime Minister Suminwa shows a strong commitment to the Congolese people. She stresses the importance of governance that prioritizes citizens’ well-being, reminding leaders of their fundamental duty to serve others, not themselves.

Suminwa’s speech should inspire other African governments to follow suit. In Africa, where many countries face significant economic and social challenges, leaders need to set an example by living modestly and using state resources responsibly and ethically. Leaders should avoid ostentatious behavior and reflect the living conditions of the majority of their citizens.

Judith Suminwa’s speech is a powerful call for action and reflection for all African leaders. By placing social issues at the forefront, she reminds everyone of the true mission of public service: to improve the lives of the most vulnerable. It’s time for all African governments to adopt governance practices that reflect humility, solidarity, and a commitment to the well-being of all their citizens.
