Burkina Faso: The new president of the Constitutional Council formally took office

The new president of the constitutional council of Burkina Faso Mr. Barthélémy KERE took up his post this April 11th, 2023. It was just after the solemn swearing-in ceremony that the Head of state captain Ibrahim Traoré presided over, at Ouaga 2000.

« I swear to fulfill my duties well and faithfully, to exercise them impartially in respect of the Constitution, to keep the deliberations and votes secret, not to take any public position, and not to provide any consultation on issues falling within the competence of the council».

Those statements result from the oath that Mr. Barthélémy KERE took. Actually, he was appointed by presidential decree on February 24th as the President of the Constitutional Council. That ceremony allowed him officially to take office.

As response, the President Ibrahim Traore who presided over the ceremony declared, « I take note of your oath and refer you to the exercise of your duties».

Mr. Barthélémy KERE, who expressed his gratitude to the Head of State for the trust placed in him, stated that his swearing-in ceremony took place in a difficult context for Burkina Faso, marked by a security crisis that threatens the foundations of the nation.

Mr. KERE stated, « Only our firm commitment together with all the living forces of the nation around you, Mr. President of the Transition, Head of State, and with our fighting forces, will enable us to overcome this evil».

On behalf of the entire College of Sages, the new President of the Constitutional Council pledged to work to ensure the constitutionality of laws, the conformity of treaties and international agreements with the Constitution.

 This former Minister of Justice and Human Rights, pledged also to guarantee the regularity of national consultations, the proper functioning of institutions, and to protect the fundamental rights of citizens.

The Constitutional Council, under the leadership of its new president, intends to play its role in ensuring that the major reforms initiated by the transitional authorities are in line with the Constitution. That will allow to strengthen the rule of law in Burkina Faso.
