Mali: 64 Years of Independence, call for national unity as key to overcoming terrorism

September 22, 2024, marks the 64th anniversary of the independence of Mali, celebrated in a context of political transition where national sovereignty is a central concern. Since August 2020, the country has been experiencing a renewal characterized by political, economic, and institutional reforms. The Transition authorities, despite facing a security crisis, have succeeded in strengthening the Malian army, which is now capable of conducting strategic operations, such as the recapture of Kidal in November 2023.

This military strengthening is accompanied by a greater reclamation of national sovereignty. The Malian government is working to establish solid foundations for a more autonomous future through reforms that go beyond immediate responses and address the root causes of problems. The enactment of a new Constitution, inter-Malian dialogue, and mining sector reform illustrate this ambition to regain control over Mali’s decisions.

Diplomatically, Mali has distanced itself from former Western allies like France and the United States, opting instead for partners deemed more reliable, such as Russia, China, and Turkey. This shift aligns with a desire to redefine national priorities, placing Malian interests above external agendas.

A key step in this quest for sovereignty is the creation of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), a pact signed with Burkina Faso and Niger. This regional alliance represents strengthened solidarity in the face of common security challenges and a shared vision of defense against external interference. Together, these countries form a bloc determined to control their own destiny.

On this 64th anniversary, Malians are called to unity. The fight against terrorism and the consolidation of national sovereignty depend on this cohesion. Despite the challenges, Mali moves forward with determination. National unity remains the key to overcoming threats and building a prosperous future where sovereignty is a tangible reality.
