Benin: First use of VAR to revolutionize the national soccer championship
The Benin Football Federation (FBF) is taking a significant step towards professionalizing national football. On November 9 and 10, the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) will be implemented for the first time in the Benin league during the 7th round of the Pro League. The matches between Coton FC and ASVO, as well as JSO against AS Police, will be the first to benefit from this technological tool.
This decision reflects the FBF’s commitment to align with international standards and tackle the challenges of accurate officiating. The use of VAR is expected to reduce controversies surrounding refereeing decisions, bringing more fairness and transparency to the game. While this technology sometimes sparks debate, it has proven effective in several top competitions, enhancing the credibility of results.
The FBF plans, if the trial phase is successful, to install VAR in a major stadium in the country before expanding its coverage to other sports facilities. This expansion aims not only to modernize the football infrastructure in Benin but also to improve the quality of the experience for fans.
