Senegal: The new national coach to be chosen by the end of the year
The president of the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), Augustin Senghor, announced that the new coach of the Senegal national football team will be chosen before the end of the year. This statement came after the Lions’ victory against Burundi (2-0) in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Senghor clarified that the decision now lies with the FSF executive committee, which will define the criteria and profile for the successor of Aliou Cissé, the former coach, whose contract was not renewed on October 2. He added that it is still “too early” to discuss the potential continuation of interim coach Pape Thiaw, who has done an excellent job, securing four wins in as many matches.
The FSF president reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to prioritize local expertise, emphasizing that they will not launch an international call for applications but will continue to support Senegalese coaches, whether based in Senegal or abroad. This strategy helped Senegal win their first AFCON title in 2021 under Aliou Cissé.
Senghor also praised the national team’s performance in the qualifiers, where Senegal finished at the top of Group L with 16 points, five wins, one draw, and a solid defense with only one goal conceded. He congratulated the players and staff for their “perfect mastery” of the game despite the coaching
