Burkina Faso: Helmet, vital protection and a legal obligation from January 2025
In Burkina Faso, the roads are unfortunately often the scene of fatal accidents, especially for motorcyclists. Too many lives are lost due to the failure to wear a helmet, an essential piece of safety equipment for road users.
The helmet is designed to absorb shocks and protect the skull in the event of an accident. Health service data shows that head injuries are the leading cause of death among motorbike riders and passengers. Yet, many Burkinabe continue to neglect this simple but vital safety measure.
According to road police statistics, accidents involving motorcyclists account for a large portion of road fatalities. In the event of a fall or collision, a well-fitted helmet protects the head, significantly reducing the risk of brain injuries. Ignoring this safety measure is putting one’s life in unnecessary danger.
In addition to the physical consequences, not wearing a helmet is subject to legal penalties. In an effort to protect citizens, the authorities will intensify road checks starting in January 2025.
Life is precious, and every Burkinabe deserves to return home safely to their family. Wearing a helmet is a sign of responsibility and respect for oneself and others. Let us raise awareness among our loved ones, friends, and colleagues to adopt this simple reflex. Together, let’s make the roads of Burkina Faso a safe place for everyone. A helmet today, a life saved tomorrow!
