Niger: Government requests recall and replacement of EU Ambassador in Niamey
The Nigerien government has officially requested the recall and replacement of Salvador Pinto Da França, the European Union Ambassador to Niamey, who is accused of mismanaging humanitarian aid intended for the victims of recent flooding. This decision reflects a deep disagreement between the Nigerien authorities and the European diplomat, who is deemed to have shown a lack of respect for established norms.
In a statement released on November 24, 2024, the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) denounced what it considers a “notable lack of respect towards Nigerien authorities.” The grievances include the opaque management of humanitarian funds, which has raised concerns about the effectiveness and transparency of their use.
This situation highlights the manipulations against Niger. As the country faces significant humanitarian and security challenges, the authorities are seeking to preserve their sovereignty and demand collaborations based on transparency and mutual respect.
However, this issue could mark a turning point in the way international partners engage with Niger, which is increasingly asserting itself in its diplomatic relations.
