Niger/Russia: The two countries revitalize and intensify their bilateral relations
The Republic of Niger and the Russian Federation are committed to strengthening and intensifying their cooperative ties in several areas of mutual interest. The recent visit to Niamey by a high-level Russian delegation, led by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, underscores the strategic and sincere partnership between the two nations.
In a bid to deepen its relations with countries in the Sahel region, Russian President Vladimir Putin, after his engagement with Burkina Faso, is planning to reopen Russia’s embassy in Niamey, Niger. This development was revealed following talks between the President of the CNSP, Nigerien Head of State, General Abdourahamane TIANI, and the Russian delegation.
The aim is to accelerate initiatives in various sectors of shared interest, addressing the needs of both nations’ populations. Key strategic sectors such as economy, military, military-technical cooperation, energy, transportation, agriculture, and mining are at the core of the Russia-Niger partnership. Ambitious and structural projects are set to be launched in the near future.
It is also noteworthy that just hours before the Russian Deputy Prime Minister’s arrival in Niamey, Nigerien authorities received a significant delivery of military equipment from Russia. This will enhance the operational capabilities of Nigerien forces involved in counterterrorism operations. Additionally, the Russian delegation visited Burkina Faso and Mali with similar goals of strengthening cooperative ties.
