Togolese President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, determined to tackle the country’s energy challenges and ensure universal access to reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy, has made an important strategic decision. President Gnassingbé has chosen to leverage technological advancements offered by small modular reactors to diversify Togo’s energy sources.

On December 2, 2024, during a ceremony held in Lomé, the President presided over the signing of an agreement between Togo and the American company Nano Nuclear Energy for the production of electricity using micro nuclear reactors.

This agreement marks a significant milestone in the country’s energy policy and a long-term commitment to a greener and more secure energy transition.

In line with this initiative, President Faure Gnassingbé also announced the creation of the Togo Atomic Energy Commission, an agency tasked with promoting peaceful and civilian applications of nuclear science and technology.

The Commission will be responsible for the development and oversight of projects aimed at safely and beneficially utilizing nuclear energy for the country’s development. With this initiative, Togo is positioning itself as a leader in the energy transition in West Africa.

Under the leadership of President Faure Gnassingbé, the country intends not only to meet its domestic energy needs but also to offer a model of sustainable and inclusive energy development for the region.
