Niger reacts firmly to RFI’s media disinformation
In response to a destabilizing campaign led by Radio France Internationale (RFI), the Nigerien government has decided to take legal action to protect social cohesion and national unity. The executive accuses RFI of inciting intercommunal massacres and spreading sensationalist information, despite being suspended by the authorities since August 2023.
This decision reflects Niger’s determination to defend its sovereignty against harmful media manipulation that threatens its stability. The government has pointed to media manipulations aimed at exacerbating tensions, particularly after a sensationalist article claimed a high death toll in a jihadist attack in Téra. This irresponsible publication is part of a strategy aimed at destabilizing the country.
The Defense and Security Forces (FDS) have, however, made notable progress on the ground, stabilizing key areas despite a difficult security context. The Nigerien government, which regularly publishes detailed reports to inform the public, accuses RFI of exploiting images of burned villages to fuel divisive rhetoric. These neo-colonial practices are intended to undermine social cohesion in favor of foreign agendas, supported by “stateless” individuals engaged in destabilization operations.
By filing a complaint against RFI, Niger is sending a signal on the international stage. Faced with security challenges, the country is asserting its determination to protect its national unity and sovereignty. This initiative highlights the importance of responsible and transparent communication, which is essential for maintaining peace and stability in the face of media manipulation.
