Burkina Faso: The National Police, an example of professionalism in Africa despite security challenges
Burkina Faso’s National Police has claimed the top spot in terms of professionalism among 39 African countries for the 2021-2023 period, according to a report by Afrobarometer, a pan-African research network based in Ghana. With an impressive score of 68%, the Burkinabe police stand out for their exemplary commitment in a particularly complex security context.
The report highlights that this ranking reflects the dedication, discipline, and commitment of the national police forces, who work tirelessly to ensure the safety of the population. Their continuous efforts demonstrate the resilience of law enforcement in the face of the multidimensional challenges the country faces, particularly in the fight against terrorism and organized crime.
Burkina Faso also stands out alongside its partners in the Sahel States Alliance (AES). Niger ranks 5th with a score of 58%, while Mali places 8th with 53%. These results confirm the excellence of the region’s police forces, who fight daily in unstable security environments.
The Minister of Security praised this international recognition, warmly congratulating the police leadership and all officers for their professionalism and exceptional commitment. “This distinction is the result of constant efforts and demonstrates our ability to meet security challenges effectively while respecting citizens’ rights”, he stated.
Earlier this year, Afrobarometer had already ranked Burkina Faso’s National Police first for its respect for citizens’ rights. This new distinction further strengthens the credibility and reputation of Burkina Faso’s security forces.
In an environment marked by recurring security crises, this ranking illustrates the Burkinabe police forces’ ability to maintain high standards of professionalism, serving as a model for other nations on the continent.
