DRC: Head of State Félix Tshisekedi presides over an extraordinary meeting in tribute to Patrice Lumumba
On Wednesday, at the African Union City, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Félix Tshisekedi, chaired the second extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Suminwa government. This exceptional session, dedicated to reviewing priority issues for the country, was particularly significant as it precedes a highly symbolic national day.
Traditionally held on Fridays, the weekly Council of Ministers meeting was brought forward in light of the commemoration of January 17, a public holiday dedicated to the memory of Patrice-Emery Lumumba, the first Prime Minister of the DRC and a national hero. Lumumba, whose pan-African vision and struggle for independence continue to inspire generations, remains an iconic figure in Congolese and African history.
During the meeting, government members addressed major national issues, amid a context where the country faces multiple challenges. The Head of State urged his team to honor Lumumba’s memory by pursuing policies focused on social justice, integrity, and inclusive development—principles that guided the late leader’s commitment.
The January 17 celebration will be marked by various cultural and ceremonial events throughout the country. These events not only commemorate the sacrifice of Patrice Lumumba but also emphasize the importance of his legacy in building a sovereign and united DRC.
By advancing this crucial meeting, the government demonstrated its determination to blend action with memory, while ensuring the spirit of service and dedication to the nation is preserved. This approach reflects an ambition to build a DRC worthy of the ideals of its historical heroes while effectively addressing the aspirations of its citizens.
