Burkina Faso: The Presidential Health Initiative, a major step forward under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré
As part of the overhaul of the Burkinabe healthcare system, the Director of the President’s Office, Captain Martha Céleste Anderson Dekomwin MEDAH, representing the Head of State, launched the construction work for the communal medical centers under the Presidential Health Initiative (IPS) this Friday.
In Bérégadougou, a town located about ten kilometers from Banfora, a new communal medical center will soon be established. This facility will be equipped with emergency medical services, imaging, a pharmacy, an operating room, a hospitalization service, a laboratory, a blood bank, and an administrative block.
The laying of the foundation stone marks the start of the construction of 55 communal medical centers across the country over the next five years, as well as the building of five resuscitation and anesthesia units in hospitals throughout the country. For 2025, around twenty communal medical centers, two hemodialysis units, five resuscitation units, and a heart institute will be constructed. Additionally, innovative products for the molecular diagnosis of breast cancer will be made available.
Captain MEDAH reminded that this initiative aims to modernize healthcare infrastructure and enhance the provision and quality of healthcare across the country. She also urged the beneficiaries to take ownership of this initiative to ensure its success.
The National Coordinator of the IPS, Drissa TRAORÉ, emphasized that the Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, considers health a national priority. Since coming to power, several bold reforms have been introduced to improve the Burkinabe healthcare system. Among these are the allocation of 12% of the state budget to the Ministry of Health, the improvement of technical platforms in hospitals, a significant reduction in the cost of certain medical exams, and the acquisition of high-performance equipment for healthcare facilities.
Adopted by the Council of Ministers on July 3, 2024, the IPS reflects President Ibrahim Traoré’s commitment to sustainably transform the Burkinabe healthcare system by ensuring equitable access to care and improving the working conditions of medical staff. This initiative marks a significant step toward a Burkina Faso where health is a right accessible to all.
