Montpellier’s two-match winning streak in Ligue 1 came to an end on Friday night as they were defeated 2-0 by RC Lens in the opening match of Round 20.

Second-to-last in the standings, Montpellier hoped to continue their strong run to move closer to survival, but Lens quickly showed their superiority. In the first minute, Lens opened the scoring after a series of defensive errors from Montpellier, allowing M’Bala Nzola to tap the ball into an empty net (1-0).

Despite attempts to respond, Montpellier couldn’t change the course of the match. Lens, more composed, saw a goal from Koyalipou ruled out by VAR for a prior foul, and another chance for Montpellier’s Fayad was also annulled for offside. The intensity increased in the 26th minute with the expulsions of coaches Jean-Louis Gasset and Will Still after a heated exchange.

In the second half, Lens sealed the win with a goal from their new signing, Jérémy Agbonifo, who scored just 1 minute and 20 seconds after coming on. This victory lifts Lens to 5th place in the standings, while Montpellier, still struggling, could fall to the bottom of the table by the end of the weekend.
