Burkina Faso / CHU of Bobo-Dioulasso: When nursing staff call for military management

Burkina Faso is set to take a major step forward in its healthcare system with the construction of a new reference hospital in Bobo-Dioulasso. Started in 2020, the work on this University Hospital Center (CHU) is expected to be completed by March 2025. This ambitious project, meeting international standards, promises modern infrastructure and cutting-edge equipment. However, beyond its inauguration, the crucial question of its management approach arises, to avoid past mistakes and ensure its long-term effectiveness.
The management challenges in public healthcare structures in Burkina Faso are well known: embezzlement of funds, poor allocation of resources, lack of transparency, and operational inefficiencies. These dysfunctions have often compromised the quality of services provided to the population. In response, voices are rising among healthcare workers to entrust the management of this new hospital to the military or a mixed team, known for their rigor and discipline.
President Ibrahim Traoré and his government have demonstrated, through several initiatives, their commitment to rigorous and transparent management of public resources. This approach could serve as a model for the management of the new CHU in Bobo-Dioulasso. By establishing strict control mechanisms, promoting accountability, and involving competent and honest actors, the government can avoid past mistakes and ensure efficient management of this hospital.
“First, military discipline and increased rigor will enforce strict adherence to working hours and responsibilities, effective management of human, financial, and material resources, better task distribution, and a reduction in internal conflicts and possible strikes. A militarized management also ensures better monitoring of equipment and supplies with rigorous maintenance of medical equipment, regular supply of medicines and reagents, and the implementation of strict stock control to avoid shortages,” said Dr. Salam Savadogo.
The construction of the new hospital in Bobo-Dioulasso is a major advancement for Burkina Faso’s healthcare system. However, its success will largely depend on the management approach adopted. By drawing inspiration from the rigor demonstrated by President Ibrahim Traoré and his government, and taking into account the proposals from healthcare workers, Burkina Faso can make this CHU a model of effective and transparent management. This project should become a symbol of the country’s commitment to a sustainable and accessible healthcare system.
