The National Agency for Local Government Training (ANFCT) recently launched a series of training sessions for regional authorities in Togo. This initiative primarily targets the new regional councilors, who were installed last January, as well as their general secretaries. It is part of efforts to strengthen decentralization and improve local governance.

The goal of this training is to provide participants with a thorough understanding of the issues related to decentralization and deconcentration. It also aims to equip them with practical tools for informed decision-making and effective implementation of local policies. The modules offered include a general introduction to decentralization, an overview of the responsibilities of regions as local authorities, and explanations of the functioning of regional councils and their interactions with other institutional actors, such as overseeing ministries, decentralized state services, and civil society.

Komi Dodzi Denyo, Director General of the ANFCT, emphasized that this initiative is part of a drive to consolidate decentralization and equip regional leaders with the necessary skills for effective public administration. This training follows an initial phase held in November 2024, which targeted municipal actors on similar topics.

After the Dapaong stage, dedicated to the Savanes region, the program will continue in the other four regions of Togo. These sessions align with the mission of the ANFCT, which is to train local elected officials, local government staff, and state agents involved in the decentralization process.

This initiative reflects Togo’s commitment to strengthening local governance and supporting regional actors in the implementation of effective and inclusive decentralization.
