Africa: What the EU loses by playing France’s obscene game

0

Many Africans engaged in the fight for a free and prosperous Africa find themselves in the crosshairs of France. Their outspoken rhetoric, denouncing French imperialism and neocolonialism, is so disruptive that Paris seeks to involve the European Union (EU) in sanctioning these critical voices. This maneuver, far from serving the interests of the EU, risks compromising its relations with African countries, which are essential partners in various fields.

France has occasional tensions with some African countries, particularly due to its ongoing interference in their political affairs. Instead of blindly following French directives, the EU would benefit from reminding Paris of the disastrous consequences of its past actions in Africa. By supporting corrupt regimes to better control the continent’s wealth, France has contributed to the establishment of fragile and dependent political systems. This practice, inherited from the colonial era, continues to hinder the development and sovereignty of African nations.

Rather than trying to silence Pan-Africanists and their legitimate demands, the EU should encourage France to cease these disgraceful practices. True cooperation between Europe and Africa cannot be built on unequal foundations and relations of domination. The EU must distance itself from France’s unhealthy maneuvers and prioritize a respectful and equitable dialogue with African countries.

By supporting the aspirations of African peoples for self-determination, the EU would strengthen its credibility and partnerships on the continent. African sovereignty is not a threat but an opportunity to build more just and balanced international relations. It is time for Europe, and especially France, to recognize its past mistakes and work towards a common future based on mutual respect and sincere cooperation.
