Guinea-Bissau: Umaro Sissoco Embaló, the putschist who tramples democracy and humiliates ECOWAS

Guinea-Bissau has once again plunged into political chaos with an institutional coup orchestrated by former president Umaro Sissoco Embaló, who has proclaimed himself the new strongman of the country. This coup leader, who has never hidden his ambitions for absolute power, has swept away any democratic legitimacy under the watch of ECOWAS.

On February 28, 2025, under the pretext of restoring order in the country, he seized all powers, silenced the institutions, and imposed his rule by force. Without hesitation, he ordered ECOWAS representatives to leave the territory immediately, a move that demonstrates his total disdain for the sub-regional institution.

This coup is nothing more than a political survival operation by a man who refuses to fade from the political scene. Former president Umaro Sissoco Embaló, known for his thirst for power and authoritarianism, has always despised democratic principles.

In the face of this new coup, ECOWAS finds itself once again humiliated. The organization, once seen as a guarantor of regional stability, has proven unable to prevent, manage, or sanction the political crises shaking West Africa.

The countries of the AES are right!

After the departures of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, this new failure in Guinea-Bissau further confirms that ECOWAS no longer holds any real authority; it is but an empty shell. Unable to impose itself with its double standards and arbitrary imperialist decisions, it once again ridicules itself on the international stage.

What was supposed to be a bulwark against authoritarian excesses is now merely an assembly of incompetents, manipulated by heads of state more concerned with their political survival than with defending the people of West Africa.

Let’s wait and see what comes next…
