Niger: A decisive step forward with the delivery of the final report of the National Conferences to President Abdourahamane Tiani

General Abdourahamane Tiani has officially received the final report of the National Assizes held at the end of February in Niamey. This document proposes a five-year transition under military rule, a decision that marks a turning point in Niger’s political future. During the ceremony, the head of the CNSP (National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland) emphasized that this period is necessary to stabilize the country and strengthen its institutions.

The findings of the report highlight the need to secure the territory, restructure the economy, and reinforce national sovereignty. The transitional authorities believe that a hasty return to a civilian regime could jeopardize the progress made since the change of power in 2023. Therefore, the priority will be placed on national defense, institutional reform, and socio-economic development.

This continued military leadership is seen as a strategic choice in response to the ongoing security challenges in Niger and the wider Sahel region. By distancing itself from certain external influences and strengthening cooperation with regional allies, the CNSP aims to redefine the governance of the country on solid foundations.

With this report in hand, General Tiani now has a clear roadmap for Niger’s future. Its adoption and implementation will determine whether this extended transition will lead to a true rebuilding of the country or if it will spark further tensions.
