Cross-border threats: Faced with common challenges, Niger and Nigeria want to strengthen their ties

For the authorities of the Republic of Niger and their counterparts from the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the security of their territories and peoples is paramount. To this end, it is crucial for both nations to set aside their differences and resolve misunderstandings in order to pool their efforts against common challenges, particularly security threats.

The recent meeting in Niamey between Niger’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Nigeriens Abroad, Bakary Yaou Sangaré, and the Nigerian Ambassador to Niger, Mohammed Sani Usman, aligns with this logic. Discussions were centered on establishing mechanisms to ensure the security of their shared borders.

Indeed, securing the 1,497 km-long border between Niger and Nigeria has become a significant challenge due to the resurgence of terrorist activities, organized crime, and illicit trafficking in the region. “I am here to discuss strengthening our relationship. The peoples of Niger and Nigeria are brothers, and nothing can separate us”, said the Nigerian Ambassador to Niger.

He emphasized that unity and solidarity between the two countries are crucial to overcoming the security threats that endanger their populations and hinder their real development. This approach should extend to other neighboring countries facing the same challenges in order to permanently address these issues.
