Foot/Golden Shoe 2023: only one African in the top 10, Diallo in 12th place

With 36 Premier League goals, Erling Haaland has won his first Golden shoe, the trophy awarded to the top scorer in the European Champions League. Victor Osimhen, Serie A’s Capocannoniere, is the only African in the top 10.

It’s the end of the European championships and therefore time for the first individual awards. Before the 2023 Ballon d’Or, which will undoubtedly be much closer than when Benzema was crowned last year, the Golden Shoe goes to Erling Haaland. The Norwegian striker hit the ground running in his first year in the Premier League.

Signed by Manchester City from Dortmund, Haaland scored 36 goals and collected 72 points. At the age of 22, he has now added his name to the trophy cabinet for the first time, succeeding Robert Lewandowski, the winner in 2021 and 2022.

Harry Kane, who scored 30 league goals for Tottenham, came second. The two top scorers in the Premier League are ahead of the two top scorers in Ligue 1: Kylian Mbappé (29 goals, PSG) and Alexandre Lacazette (27 goals, Lyon), third and fourth respectively. In fifth place is the first African player. Victor Osimhen.

The Nigerian finished Serie A Capocannoniere with 26 goals. He is the only African in the 2023 Golden Shoe top flight.

To find another African international in the ranking, look no further than Habib Diallo in 12th place. The Senegalese scored 20 goals in Ligue 1.

Finally, Mohamed Salah, the most prolific African in recent years, comes in at 14th place. With “just” 19 goals, it is the first time he has failed to reach the 20-goal mark in the league since joining Liverpool in 2017.
