Diplomacy: When Burkina Faso reaffirms its support for Morocco’s autonomy

Burkina Faso has reaffirmed its support for the initiative of the autonomy plan presented by Morocco, emphasizing that this plan is «the only credible and realistic solution» for the resolution of the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

Burkina Faso has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan, stating that it is the only credible and realistic solution to the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

This affirmation was made in a joint statement following the fourth session of the Joint Cooperation Commission held in Dakhla, co-chaired by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Nasser Bourita and Olivia Ragnaghnewendé Rouamba, respectively. The Burkinabe Foreign Minister emphasized Burkina Faso’s firm and unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity.

The statement also mentioned that Ouagadougou closely monitors the provocative actions taken by the Polisario since October 21, 2020, which have hindered the free movement of people and goods and weakened the ceasefire.

In light of this, Burkina Faso called for an immediate halt to these operations, as they undermine the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General to achieve a political solution to the issue of the Moroccan Sahara.

Additionally, the Burkinabe Foreign Minister highlighted that Burkina Faso’s opening of a Consulate General in Dakhla on October 23, 2020, is in line with its historical position on the matter.

Furthermore, she commended the efforts of the United Nations as an exclusive and consensus-based framework to reach a realistic, practical, and lasting solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara.
