Algeria: President Tebboune inaugurates major projects for the country’s mining future in Tindouf

President  Tebboune Abdelmadjid concluded his working visit to the wilaya of Tindouf on Thursday evening by launching several strategic projects, including the iron ore processing plant in Gara Djebilet and the 950 km railway linking Bechar to Tindouf and Gara Djebilet.

The highlight of the visit was the laying of the foundation stone of the Gara Djebilet iron ore plant project, which houses one of the world’s largest reserves, estimated at 3.5 billion tons. This colossal project is hailed as «the largest mining investment in Algeria since Independence».

The Gara Djebilet megaproject, planned from 2022 to 2040, will experience a first phase of production of 2 to 3 million tons per year from 2022 to 2025, before reaching an annual production of 40 to 50 million tons from 2026. In terms of employment, the Sonarem mining group expects to create 25.000 direct jobs and 125.000 indirect jobs, while the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, mentions 15.000 jobs.

It is important to remember that the Gara Djebilet deposit, divided into three mining zones – Gara Djebilet-Ouest, Gara Djebilet-Centre, and Gara Djebilet-Est – has been in operation for more than a year, symbolizing a significant milestone in the mining development of Algeria.

The inauguration of these noteworthy projects highlights the Algerian government’s commitment to economic growth, job creation and the responsible exploitation of natural resources, opening up new opportunities for the country’s mining sector in the coming decades.
