Niger: Diplomatic Meetings Between the United States and the Government of General Abdourahamane Tiani
In Niger over the past weekend, the United States Ambassador to Niger, Mrs. Kathleen FitzGibbon, held an audience with the Head of Government, Lamine Zeine, at the Prime Minister’s office in Niamey, according to official sources.
Indeed, this meeting, part of routine diplomatic activities, took place without any press statement following the audience, as indicated by the Nigerien Press Agency (ANP). Mrs. FitzGibbon, who has been in Niger for several weeks after the overthrow of President Bazoum, had presented the certified copy of her credentials to the Nigerien Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mr. Bakary Yaou Sangaré, on December 2nd.
In a context marked by the emergence of General Abdourahamane Tiani in power in July 2023, the United States continues to provide humanitarian support to the Nigerien people. Additionally, they have decided to maintain their military troops as part of the fight against terrorism, marking a difference with France, which has practically severed its ties with Niger. With the new government, France will no longer have a grip on the governance of this country, which is crucial for its interests in Africa.
It is worth noting that this diplomatic meeting holds particular significance in the current political landscape, highlighting the importance of reliable international exchanges for Niger in this new era under the leadership of General Abdourahamane Tiani.
