Football : Algeria’s place in the new FIFA ranking of December 2023

The International Federation of Football Association (FIFA) released its new rankings on Thursday, December 21, three weeks after the last update on November 30, 2023. The update considered only eleven matches played during the month of December, mostly involving teams from the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) participating in the Pacific Games.

The December FIFA rankings were influenced by eleven matches, with nine involving Oceania Confederation teams and two friendly matches featuring Colombia against Venezuela and Mexico. This means that African countries, including Algeria, are not prominently affected by the FIFA rankings update.

Algeria maintains its 30th position in the rankings assigned by FIFA on November 30, as well as its 4th place in the African rankings. Other prominent African football teams also maintain their positions : Morocco stays at 13th globally and 1st in Africa, Senegal remains 20th globally and 2nd in Africa, and Tunisia holds the 28th position globally.

It is noteworthy that the changes in the African Top 10 rankings are favorable to Ivory Coast, benefiting from Venezuela’s poor performance, allowing them to climb one spot in the world rankings. The host country of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2023) moves from the 50th to the 49th position in the global rankings for December.
