Golden Globes 2024 : « Anatomy of a Fall » by Justine Triet crowned best foreign film and best screenplay

A speech that raises doubts. Awarded the Palme d’Or in 2023 for her film « Anatomy of a Fall » French director Justine Triet made a splash at the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday, January 7. Her feature film received two new awards: Best Foreign Film and Best Screenplay. A triumph that earned her congratulations from President Emmanuel Macron.

However, during her acceptance speech for Best Screenplay, the 45-year-old director made a crucial allusion that seems to clarify the ambiguity about the end of her film. « We were thinking, ‘Well, it’s very dark, radical, no one will come to see it. It’s too long, they talk non-stop, there’s no music, two fights, a suicide, a dog vomiting. But I’m making this radical film, and after, I’ll make a series that will make us money.’ I don’t know at what point it derailed, but thank you ».

A word from this speech caught the attention of the press : “suicide” Anatomie d’une chute tells the story of Sandra Voyter, a woman accused of the mysterious death of her husband, who fell from a window, without ever revealing whether her husband’s death resulted from murder, an accident, or suicide.

Asked by Entertainment Weekly on Sunday, Justine Triet did not revisit her speech but addressed the famous ambiguity during the film’s shooting. « It was very important for us not to talk about it on set with the actors so that the film focuses on this ambiguity. For example, she may not have killed him, but she may have pushed him to suicide. There are many possibilities. It’s not all black or all white ». she says.

Although the film failed to secure a spot among the nominations for Best Foreign Film at the 2024 Oscars, “Anatomie d’une chute” continues to shine internationally. In addition to winning two major awards at the Golden Globes, Justine Triet’s film can boast of being among Barack Obama’s top ten favorite films.

At the box office, “Anatomie d’une chute” has been a success abroad with 1.6 million viewers outside of France. In the North American market, the film even recorded 321.000 cumulative entries, approaching the record held in 2020 by “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” with 410.000 entries.
