USA : Angela Bassett receives an Honorary Oscar for her career

After nearly 40 years in the film industry and two Oscar nominations, Angela Bassett has been honored with an honorary Oscar.

She was recognized at the 14th annual Governors Awards ceremony, a meeting of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which awards the Oscars.

« For me, this award is not like any other award. It’s not like any other award. It’s a testament to my heritage. This trophy represents my contribution to cinema. Everything I’ve given from my mind, body, and soul. As a Black actress », expressed Angela Bassett.

The 65-year-old actress took several moments in her speech to salute other Black actresses whom she admires for their talents and sacrifices.

« I am proud to share this honor with women who rise when told to step back, who speak when reduced to silence, who remain determined when told they are defeated. These women represent those I have had the honor to portray, as well as the everyday women around us who inspire us to keep fighting… And to everyone in this room. I tell you, when it comes to what we do, the decisions we make, how we embrace each other, how we must support and lift each other up, always keep in mind that the stakes are extremely high. Never forget that the stakes are extremely important because history depends on us. Why ? Because we are the prism through which future generations will see themselves. And I pray that we leave this industry more enriched, more forward-thinking, and more inclusive than we found it », she added.

The ceremony, initially scheduled for November but postponed due to the actors’ strike, also serves as a de facto break in the campaign for contenders in the current awards season.

The vote for the 96th edition of the Oscars is imminent, and the nominations will be announced on January 23 for the ceremony on March 10.
