Burkina Faso is on the brink of altering its national motto through a newly adopted draft constitutional amendment. This change specifically targets Article 34 of the Constitution, focusing on paragraph 4, which currently defines the country’s motto as « Unity-Progress-Justice. » The proposed new motto is « Homeland or Death, We Will Win. »
This amendment, introduced by the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, who also oversees Relations with Institutions, Edasso Rodrigue Bayala, is part of a broader effort to strengthen patriotic sentiment among the population.
According to the minister, the new motto is intended to reignite a sense of civic duty, drawing inspiration from values of determination and sacrifice for the nation.
« Homeland or Death, we will win » is a motto steeped in history, evoking memories of struggles for independence and self-determination.
It embodies the Burkinabe people’s resolve to overcome present-day challenges, particularly in areas such as security, governance, and development.
