Togo : Charismatic leader Faure Gnassingbé advocates unity and solidarity within the UNIR party

On Monday, February 26, 2024, President Faure Gnassingbé of Togo presided over the opening ceremony of the second statutory congress of the political party Union for the Republic (UNIR) at the Palace of Congress in Kara.

More than fifteen hundred delegates from all regions of Togo participated in this congress, held under the theme : « Uniting Further for Greater Engagement in Serving the Population ».

The proceedings aimed to enable the majority party in the National Assembly to revise its texts, renew its leadership, and nominate its candidates to defend the party’s colors in the upcoming legislative and regional elections.

Addressing his supporters, the president urged them to work hand in hand to build a bridge between the party’s vision and the real-life experiences of every Togolese wherever they may be. « When we decided to make this major transition on April 12, 2012, in the political life of our country, we were driven by a profound conviction, that our strength comes from our unity, our ability to transcend our differences to forge a common future », he declared.

The president praised the mobilization of the militants before calling on them to humility, discipline, and solidarity to remain faithful to the party’s political project.

Referring to the upcoming legislative and regional elections in the country, Faure Gnassingbé is already convinced of UNIR’s success, given the mobilization and fervor of its supporters. He therefore urged militants to remain united and supportive in their interpersonal relationships.

This second statutory congress follows the one held in 2017 in Tsévié (South).

Founded on April 14, 2012, in Atakpamé, the Union for the Republic Party is the majority party in the National Assembly and within municipal councils. The party is now led by President Faure Gnassingbé and has won all elections since then. The party is actively preparing to mobilize its supporters in all electoral districts for the April 20, 2024, elections.
