Senegal : Towards a Presidential Election on June 2, 2024 ?
In Senegal, talks regarding the date of the presidential election appear to be coming to a conclusion. According to various sources, a consensus has been reached on June 2nd by participants in the discussions, despite the boycott by some political actors of the dialogue convened by President Macky Sall.
According to information relayed by Seneweb, participants in the talks held at the Abdou Diouf International Conference Center in Diamniadio have reached an agreement on June 2nd, a proposal put forward by the political commission.
Another commission has recommended that the head of state oversee the transition until the election of his successor. The validation of the presidential election date will be submitted to Macky Sall, who will then present it to the Constitutional Council for validation.
During the opening of the dialogue, boycotted by some Senegalese political actors, Macky Sall stated that his objective in convening these discussions was to achieve a consensus to ensure the credibility of the election, under national and international supervision.
He emphasized that the date would be set by decree, regardless of any potential disputes. « Those who refused to participate in this dialogue do so to their own disadvantage, not to the detriment of the president of the Republic », he said. Macky Sall also urged political actors to rise to the challenges facing Senegal, calling for greatness, transcendence, forgiveness, forgetfulness, and reconciliation to establish peace essential for the continuation of development efforts.
