Burkina Faso : Japan supports Biometric registration of IDPs with equipment worth 93 million CFA francs
Japan supports Burkina Faso in its initiative for the biometric registration of internally displaced persons (IDPs). The Asian country has just donated equipment worth 93 million CFA francs to the Ministry of Humanitarian Action.
In Burkina Faso, the ministry responsible for humanitarian action has received equipment from Japanese partners for the biometric registration and profiling of IDPs. Valued at approximately 93 million CFA francs, the package mainly consists of 200.000 registration cards, 120 fingerprint scanners, and 120 “power bank” batteries, according to the communication services of the ministry.
This donation is part of a comprehensive project through which Japan aims to encourage Burkina Faso to accelerate its development by harnessing the potential of digital technology, explained the Ambassador of Japan, Nagashima Jun.
For her part, the Minister of Humanitarian Action, Nandy Somé/Diallo, expressed her gratitude to the Japanese diplomat for this material support, which helps her ministry make progress in registering IDPs.
There are still significant challenges to overcome so that the biometric registration of IDPs can be extended to all regions of the country, concluded Mrs. Nandy Somé/Diallo.
It is worth noting that Japan is the largest partner of Burkina Faso in this project of biometric registration of IDPs, developing two applications to facilitate the operation.
Officially launched in December 2023 as a new IDP registration system, biometrics aim to enable the Burkinabé government to have more reliable data and streamline interventions for the displaced.
