Niger/Algeria : The Migration issue risks further straining diplomatic relations between these two countries
The diplomatic relations between Niger and Algeria have likely been strained following Niger’s rejection of Algerian mediation in the process of resolving the socio-political crisis that arose after the events of July 26, 2023. If this is the case, the migration issue risks exacerbating the situation further.
To recall, the Nigerien authorities, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed their objection on April 3rd to the treatment of their migrant compatriots in Algeria during repatriation and deportation operations targeting irregular migrants conducted by Algerian authorities.
The Algerian ambassador to the Republic of Niger was summoned for this purpose. According to reports, he was asked to intercede with the competent authorities of his country to ensure that these operations are conducted with respect for the dignity, physical and moral integrity of Nigerien nationals, as well as the protection of their property.
The day after this discussion at the Ministry responsible for Nigeriens living abroad, the Nigerien diplomat to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria was in turn summoned to the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to the official statement, this summons aimed to reaffirm their bilateral cooperation on the issue of Nigerien migrants.
Furthermore, it aimed to remind of the existence of a bilateral framework dedicated to this migration issue, which should remain the preferred forum for discussion and handling of all data and developments related to this migration issue.
The Algerian security services are particularly accused of using violent methods against migrants and seizing their property. Moreover, according to the Nigerien government, irregular migrants of other nationalities are sent to Niger. On this matter, the representation of the IOM in Niger has been approached.
These are allegations that the Algerian government considers unfounded. At this rate, one wonders about the future of diplomatic relations between these two countries if an adequate solution is not envisaged.
