Football/Barça loses 2nd place to Gerona (2-4)
For the 34th matchday, FC Barcelona was defeated by Girona with a score of 4 goals to 2, meaning the club loses its 2nd place, thus diminishing its chances of participating in the Spanish Super Cup next year.
This Saturday, the decisive match between Girona and FC Barcelona took place at the Montilivi stadium. The pressure was clearly on the Barcelona side, who needed to win at all costs to limit the damage of an already catastrophic season.
The Blaugranas were in a comfortable position at halftime, leading by one goal against their opponents. However, after coming out of the locker rooms, Xavi’s players conceded three goals in ten minutes, leading to their defeat with a score of 4 goals to 2, just like in the first leg.
With this defeat, FC Barcelona has not yet secured its place to participate in next year’s Spanish Super Cup, a first since the introduction of the new format featuring 4 teams, which includes the two finalists of the Copa del Rey (Real Mallorca and Athletic Bilbao), the Spanish champion (Real Madrid), and the second-placed team in La Liga (currently Girona).
There are only four matchdays left in the season, and FC Barcelona must hope for a mistake from Girona to regain the second place.
